Bitcoin Fullnode Install Guide for Dummies ;-)

Bitcoin Fullnode Install Guide for Dummies ;-)
Feel free to stop at Level 0 or Level 1, which is fine. More advanced configs are offered to those with more tech savvy. This guide, obviously assumes a Windows 10 install, but other OSes work fine, just find a different guide. BTW, the "For Dummies" is a callback to a set of "tech" books in the 90's intended to be as easy as possible. It is in jest and not intended to insult the reader. Finally, if you dislike the formatting, a well formatted copy can be found here
There is a fairly small subset of Bitcoin users that run a full node. I think the idea of running a full node has gotten a bad rap over the years since there is so much talk about running on a Raspberry Pi, or getting zippy SSDs. Although all of this can be fun, it is often not really required at all. Here are some ways to run a full node starting with the very simple. I'll get into more complex configs, but these are all optional.

Tech Skill Level: 0 (the basics)

  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
In many cases, thats it. If your running a new machine with a fairly good internet connection, 8 or 9 hours will be enough to complete the "Initial Block Download" (IBD). This may fill up your drive a bit, but again, on most new machines, 300 GB of space isn't that hard to come by.

Tech Skill Level: 1 (encrypted wallet)

One thing we left out in the level-0 exercise is encrypting your wallet. It's easy enough to do well, but a bit more difficult to do right. The main challenge is that humans generate really poor passwords. If you want a good password, the best way is to use something called "diceware". Basically, you just grab 4 or 5 dice and each throw of the dice represents a certain word on a special list. The throw {1,4,5,3,1} for example would be the word camping on the EFF-diceware-wordlist. So you repeat this a few times until you have a list of 8 or so words which becomes the passphrase you use to encrypt your wallet. Write it down, it is always hard to remember at first. So at level-1 your list becomes:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Choose Encrypt Wallet from the Settings menu
  5. Enter your 8 word (or so) passphrase generated using the Diceware method

Tech Skill Level: 2 (enable pruning if needed)

Though I said "300 GB of space isn't hard to come by", some times it actually is. If space is an issue, a simple way to fix it is to tell bitcoin to simple take less space. This is called "pruning" and can take that number from 300 GB down to below 5 GB. If you can't find 5 GB, then you'll have to read ahead to level-4 to add USB storage. But the good news is, enabling pruning is pretty easy, we just add another step to our working list:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer and install the app
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  5. Choose Options from the Settings menu
  6. Choose Prune block storage to: and select the max size for the blocks to use
  7. Exit and restart the bitcoin application for the changes to take effect

Pruning Dialog
Note, even setting this to 1 GB will still leave you with about a 4.5 GB install. The blocks take up a lot of space, but the chainstate and other folders eat up at least 3.5 GB and they can't be pruned. Also, be aware, to disable pruning requires you to perform the entire IBD again. While pruned some other functions my be disabled as well, so just know that pruning does limit some functionality.

Tech Skill Level: 3 (verify the installer)

Although this is arguably something that should be done at level-0, some find the intricacies of comparing hash (thumbprint) values to be tedious and beyond the scope of a beginner. You will find these types of hash compares suggested quite often as a way to prevent running tainted programs. Programs are often tainted by bad disk or network performance, but most often, taint is malicious code inserted by viruses or malware. This is a way to guard yourself against those types of attacks.
What I cover here is a very basic comparison on the certificate, but a more thorough verification advised by mosts uses a program called Gpg4Win, and is beyond the scope of this beginners guide. But regardless, most users should strive to do this minimum level of validation.
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the downloaded installer
  3. When prompted "Do you want to allow..." click Show more details
  4. In the details section select Show information about the publisher's certificate
  5. In the certificate window select the Details tab
  6. In the Details tab Subject should start with "CN = Bitcoin Core Code Signing Association"
  7. Ensure Thumbprint in Details reads ea27d3cefb3eb715ed214176a5d027e01ba1ee86
  8. If the checks pass, click OK to exit the certificate window and Yes to allow the installer to run.
  9. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  10. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  11. Do the optional pruning steps here if you wish

Certification Validation Windows
Note: The certificate used to sign the current Bitcoin installer is only valid from March 2020 to March 2021. After that point the thumbprint on the certificate will change. This is by design and intentional. If your reading this post after March 2021, then it is understood that the thumbprint has changed.

Tech Skill Level: 4 (use secondary storage)

We glossed over the "new machine with fairly good internet" part. Truth be known many people do not have fairly new machines, and find the IBD to take longer than the "over night" best wishes. For most people the slowdown is the disk access when calculating what is called chainstate. This requires fast random reads and writes to the disk. If you have an SSD disk, this will be no problem, but if you have a non-SSD "spinning" disk, random writes are always slow. Though an SSD will speed things up, they are pricey, so a nice middle ground may be a simple high-end USB key drive. You can get some with 10 to 15 MB/s random writes for $20 on Amazon. This is usually a order of magnitude faster than a "spinning" disk. And with pruning (see level-2), a small USB drive should be fine.
Once you decide on a drive, the tricky part will be to enable external storage. It requires editing a configuration file and adding a line. First, we want to create a directory on the key drive. You will need to determine the drive letter of your USB key drive. For the sake of this example, we will assume it is D:, but you must determine this yourself and correct the example. Once you know the drive letter, create a blank folder on the drive called Bitcoin. So for this example, creating Bitcoin on drive D: will create the path D:\Bitcoin. Once done, assuming that D: is your drive, here are the new steps including the edit of the configuration file:
  1. Download Bitcoin Core
  2. Launch the installer, verify it, then run it
  3. Launch the installed "Bitcoin Core" app and let it run overnight
  4. Do the wallet encryption steps here if you wish
  5. Do the optional pruning steps here if you wish
  6. Launch "Notepad" by typing "Notepad.exe" in the windows search bar then click Open
  7. Type the line datadir=D:\Bitcoin (depending on your drive letter) in the blank file
  8. Choose Save from the File menu in notepad
  9. Type %APPDATA%\Bitcoin\bitcoin.conf (note the percent signs) in the File name box
  10. Select All Files from the Save as type dropdown
  11. Click the Save button and overwrite the file if prompted
  12. Exit and restart the bitcoin application for the changes to take effect

Save As Dialog
Now that you've reached this level of technical expertise, there are many new configuration options that you can begin to modify if you wish. Most configuration data is contained in the bitcoin.conf file and learning how to maintain it is a key step for a node operator.

Tech Skill Level: 5 (all other customizations)

Here's a short list of various things you can ADD to your bitcoin.conf file. You generally just add a new line for each configuration settings.
  • addresstype=bech32
  • changetype=bech32
The addresstype / changetype allows your wallet to use the native-segwit (bech32) format. This is the most efficient and inexpensive way to spend bitcoin, and is a recommended configuration. The default uses something called p2sh-segwit which is more compatible with older wallets, but more expensive to spend.
  • minrelaytxfee=0.00000011
Changing the minrelaytxfee setting allows you to help propagate lower fee transactions. It will require more memory but TXN memory is capped at 300 MB by default anyways, so if you have enough memory, it is a good setting to choose.
  • dbcache=2048
The dbcache setting controls how many MB of memory the program will use for the chainstate database. Since this is a key bottleneck in the IBD, setting this value high (2048 MB) will greatly speed up the IBD, assuming you have the memory to spare
  • blocksdir=C:\Bitcoin
  • datadir=D:\Bitcoin
In level-4 we discussed moving the datadir to a fast external storage, but the majority of the space used for bitcoin is the blocks directory (blocksdir). Although you should always use for fastest storage for datadir, you are free to use slow storage for blocksdir. So if you only want to consume a small amount of your SSD (assumed D:) then you can keep your blocks on your slow "spinning" drive.
  • upnp=1
One of the harder challenges you may face running a node, is to get incoming connections. If you are lucky, you may find that your firewall and network HW support the uPnP protocol. If they do, this setting will allow bitcoin to configure uPnP to allow incoming connections to your node. Other methods exist to make your node reachable, but they are well beyond the scope of this guide.

Gamble Crypto on Provably FAIR Casino, LuckyGames (TOP TIER STRATEGY INSIDE)

Hello everyone, with only 0.55 of ETH or BCH (~$75-$125 deposit) [LOWER BALANCE + FREE OPTION IS ALSO AVAILABLE AT #6+7 IN THE STRATEGY], you can start comfortably and consistently making more than $5 a day, and with this gain, you can branch out into other coins which will net you exponential growth. With this method that I will be explaining to you all here, I am now invested in gambling 13 cryptocurrencies at entry levels and am making over $30 a day, and I only started all of this on a new "proof of concept" account 20 days ago with a $175 deposit in BCH (0.8BCH).
The method is VERY SIMPLE and takes advantage of low probability of loss bets, and the high exchange rate of crypto to cash, and strategic choice of odds in the DICE game that is offered at LuckyGames.
1st. Make sure you are playing the DICE game
2nd. Set up your dice game to roll UNDER 19.
3rd. You want to set up your bet according to your balance. If you are starting from my initial example, with 0.55 coin, you will want to start with a bet of 0.00000015. Then, you want to increase your bet when you reach 1.05 coin (0.00000030), and again at 2 (0.00000060), and again at 4 (0.00000120), 8 (0.00000240), 16 (0.00000480), 32 (0.00000960), etc. You increase your bet by doubling it, just like you will be doubling your balance. Don't complicate things with your bet. If you keep your bet consistent before reaching the next milestone of balance, you will have an increased probability of continuing to win. With this bet strategy, you will maintain a consistent 0.0002% probability of having a streak long enough for losing ~60%-75% of your balance, and this already extraordinarily low probability goes down as you reach closer to your next doubled balance milestone, which will then double your bet and put your probability back to 0.0002%. This probability is impressively low for the amount of coin you are able to make per day, and should not be underestimated at how much value you can get from this by rolling multiple cryptocurrencies and branching out after just one deposit.
4th. After you have set up your bet according to your balance, you will want to click on the grey AUTO button and set up the left column to INCREASE YOUR BET ON A "STREAK OF 1 LOSSES" BY 25%, and you will want to set up the right column to RETURN TO BASE bet ON A "STREAK OF 1 WINS". Set the acceleration to maximum, and hit the START AUTOPLAY button at the bottom of the popup.
You will notice that you will get short streaks of lossess followed by streaks of wins etc, and you will notice that your balance will start to slowly crawl up. What is happening is that you are rolling a PROVABLY FAIR dice game and are trying to get the result on the right to roll under the 19 you have placed as your guess. Every time it rolls under, you win 5.21x your bet, which is increasing by 25% every time you lose before winning. This ENSURES that when you eventually win this 19% chance-to-win dice roll, you will win back ALL of what you have already bet and lost during the streak, as well as 2.21x your CURRENT INCREASED bet.
5th. This strategy is remarkable, and is incredibly safe, but PLEASE REMEMBER THAT NOTHING IS GUARANTEED. This website is PROVABLY FAIR and has all of that explained in detail on the website itself, but that means that a freak 0.0002% lose streak CAN HAPPEN, even though it is VERY IMPROBABLE. This is STILL GAMBLING. On the bright side, if you DO reach such a freak lose streak, you will have only lost around 60-75% of your balance, and if you have been withdrawing a certain amount every week and redistributing it into other crypto in the site using the in-site EXCHANGE app, you will probably be playing with profit at that point and it won't put that bad of a dent in your game.
6th. IF YOU DONT HAVE THAT BIG OF A BALANCE BUDGET, what you can do is use 0.55 of a DIFFERENT lower value coin. The beauty of gambling crypto is that the strategy REMAINS EXACTLY THE SAME no matter what crypto you are gambling, the only difference is that you will be making substatially less money... but you can still funnel your profits into other low value crypto, and work your way up from there. Don't be discouraged if you don't have a big budget for gambling. THIS STRATEGY WILL STILL MOST LIKELY BE PROFITABLE for you.
7th. If you would like to try this strategy FOR FREE using LUCKY TOKEN (which can be traded in for VIP/LEGEND time [which gives access to a bitcoin faucet of 1000/2000 satoshis per 30min] OR EVEN IPHONES/MACBOOK PRO], or if you would like to make a deposit and get started with gambling crypto with a top tier strategy, please show me some love 💚 for making this guide and sign up at LuckyGames using my affiliate link:

To everyone struggling with solvency:

Here's a bunch of tips for ways to make roubles and how to keep them coming in. Your results may vary but I started out as a complete newbie last wipe and farmed well over 400m, had all keys, all the cash I could spend. I'm on my way to that same level this wipe so it seems the strategies are working still, take them or leave them as you will.
Scav Runs
The first order of business should be purchasing an intelligence folder and upgrading your Intel center to at least level 1 (reduces timer to ~16 min) these extra runs will quickly pay for the cost of the folder, it also helps you progress towards your other hideout upgrades. Such as bitcoin farm, scav box which will help with more easy money later.
The runs. There are varying schools of thought here, some people like to take their time and loot interchange or reserv others like to get in and out quick, I am among the latter group. Neither is incorrect but I will explain my reasons for in and out runs.
My personal strategy is to spawn on factory, run straight to my scav extract (not gate 3, for the love of God). If I find a dead body along the way, I'll loot it. At my extract if there was a scav near by that I can kill quick loot and then immediately extract, I'll do that as well. It's usually 100-200k profit per run and I survive 90% of the time.
Squads Squads Squads
If you want to play solo, that's fine and perfectly viable but know that you have just set yourself against a harder task.
Squads offer huge benefits a few listed below:
Your downsides are that you're going to split loot in some way shape or form reducing potential/theoretical profitability (but in practice, it increases actual survival and there by profitability)
You have to have patience, waiting for everyone to get out of raids especially when someone dies early on into a raid is a pain.
The occasional team kill (accidents happen even amongst coordinated squads)
You'll divert at times from your objectives to complete someone else's objectives.
I usually find a 3 man squad works best at balancing the pros and the cons but duos and quads are doable. 5 man squads can get unwieldy and I really only do those on labs.
If you don't have a squad, and want one, Find a discord channel, join it, play with a random squad, if you don't like their community, find another, there are tons of discord out there keep trying until you find people you click with.
looting
Knowing what and how to loot will increase your profitablilty on every raid you survive, so your wins are better and carry your through more losses. This is hugely important if you are struggling with money/survivability trying to make every slot and rouble count.
Barter items: Commonly found items scattered throughout the map, unfortunately this list is extensive and ever-changing with the ebbs and flows of the markets. There are people and wikis that keep updated spreadsheets with item values I would suggest you refer to. Or taking a look at the market and getting a feel for it. Just playing the game you will build up this knowledge over time. The only suggestion I have here is that if you've never seen something before, get it out of raid. Worst case scenario is you find out it's worthless and you now know for next time, best case, it's a rare item (hence never seeing it before) and you just made bank.
Looting kills:
-When first opening up or 'tabbing' into a body look at the experience you get for searching that body it will be indicative of loot quality to some degree. Scavs with 50-100xp on initial opening likely just have their gun/ammo and an AI2 on them or similar. Scavs with 200-300xp are likely sporting labs keys, door keys, or rare items, search them entirely, pockets and all.
-search pmc pockets for things like grenades and meds, this is usually missed and can have good utility and or value.
-attachments, attachments, attachments. If you can't fit the gun what attachments does it have, items to focus on are suppressors, optics, lights, and lasers, combined they usually hold the majority of a kitted guns value between them, they're smaller and can easily be tucked into the nooks and crannies in your rigs.
-similarly, what ammo are they running? Check their magazines even if you can't fit the magazine the ammo may be worth taking out, did that player you just killed have 2 30 round magazines of bt in his vest? Great unload those puppies and place that single squar of 60 rounds in your pack, it's worth 20k give or take on the flea market.
-insurance fraud, always insure when going into raids. If you find a piece of armor, weapon, etc that is comparable to yours in value and utility, trade it out. Hide your insured item somewhere reasonably safe, and it will likely come back to you allowing you to free up space for more profit and mitigate risks as well. (now if someone kills you and loots you its not your stuff they're stealing).
If you're especially broke, you can plan to do this from the start. Don't bring in a Triton, bring in a micro rig, bring in a lightly modded scav weapon and trade it out the first opportunity you get, etc. Extend the life of YOUR gear by safely tucking it away. Even if you never extract your 1 set of gear might last you 5+ raids this way, costing the approximate 10-20% of value each time to insure. I've got a few Mrigs that I keep having come back to me on insurance since day 1 of the patch, at this point I've traded each of them up for a Triton or better and sold that for 10-20k end of raid 5+ times. That at this point only cost me 1kish to bring into each raid. If you want to be extra safe break down your weapons before tossing them, the likelihood of someone finding a loose suppressor or pk06 that's hidden in a patch of tall grass or a bush is laughably low.
Overall focus on value per slot when looting. Even on customs there's enough loot that when properly done can net you 700k+ profit for a single raid.
Risk Mitigation and cost effectiveness
This is where I find most people have the hardest time with their money. They buy stuff they don't need, over spend on stuff they'll never use, and risk/lose tens of thousands of roubles per round for no reason, they're better off throwing their money down the toilet.
Every item you bring should have a purpose, an intended use, take a good hard look at your play style, what you use, and don't bring fluff. Everyone has a different playstyle, skill set, and understanding so I can't tell what you use and what you don't. Be critical in your self evaluation though.
Common examples I see, friends copying weapon builds that have lasers, flashlights, or canted sights that they haven't used in the 10 raids I've watched their stream. Grenades they forget about unless I specifically ask for a grenade and they check to see if they have it. Stims they never pop, side arms they never switch to, etc.
Another thing I see far too often, players using armor long past its expiration date. Armors effectiveness at resisting penetration (and thus doing its joplb protecting you) is directly related to its durability compared to its original maximum durability. If you've repaired that kirasa armor so many times it's new maximum durability is 25. It's worthless at protecting you and even buckshot is going to tear through that fairly easily, it's best use at that point is being sold to fence. Generally speaking armor should be tossed when it is no longer repairable to at least 50% of its original maximum durability. I've killed more rookies this wipe rocking sub 20 maximum durability killa armor than I can count and that's with me using 545 ps ammo that has horrendously bad penetration. Worse yet they likely bought that useless armor on the market for 80k+ because it was the 'cheapest killa armor'
Make sure what you have has a purpose, isn't costing too much for your cash/income level to justify that purpose, and mostly make sure it's serving that purpose.
This even extends to some 'given' items that most people bring into every raid. If you're running a pistol, do you really need meds in your container? What are the odds you're going to survive a firefight, need to heal with those meds? Now balance that against how often you could've gotten out with another few items you found in raid, say wires, screws, bolts, those 4-5 extra slots could've been something worth 40-50k. This will depend on your skill but for most I'd lean towards not bringing the meds in that specific instance.
Early wipe (or if I'm broke) for instance you'll see me running a scav weapon with a sight/ foregrip, a rig, a spare mag or two (with 120ish rounds spare to repack in my gamma) meds (also gamma) and a scav backpack.
location, location, location
Where are you going? what do you expect to encounter? Why are you going there? Your gear and location should match accordingly. If I'm going to shoreline with just a scav gun solo, sure I might get lucky if I go to resort but I'm also drastically increasing my odds of running into geared enemy PMCs. I'd probably be better served looting pier, weather station, village, cottages, etc. I'll find enough loot to make 200k+ profit after a scav kill or two and I don't drastically increase my odds of dying and losing everything.
Consistent medium cash is the path to riches much more readily than rolling the dice hoping for that red key card.
These are a few tips to get you started on the path to profitability. I can do follow-ups or edits with suggested loadouts, weapons, links to barter item prices as necessary if there is interest.

Scott Alexander stars in: 'The Platonic Form of missing the point'

[James Scott] points out that Tanzanian natives using their traditional farming practices were more productive than European colonists using scientific farming. I’ve had to listen to so many people talk about how “we must respect native people’s different ways of knowing” and “native agriculturalists have a profound respect for the earth that goes beyond logocentric Western ideals” and nobody had ever bothered to tell me before that they actually produced more crops per acre, at least some of the time. That would have put all of the other stuff in a pretty different light. - Scott Alexander, "Book Review: Seeing Like a State"
I expect that for some of you, that quote speaks deeply to very angry parts of your souls. Feel free to skip the rest of this post. If you'd like to hear me rant, or you reacted to that quote by thinking, "well yeah, they really should have led with 'we can make things more productive'", read on.
It turns out that it is not true that Scott Alexander has never read a leftist. In this blog, he reads and reacts to James Scott's fantastic book "Seeing Like a State". If you haven't read this book, you can find a free pdf copy online without too much trouble. Or, if you're short on time, Alexander's summation in parts 1-6 of his review (actually it's I-VI, because status signalling) hits the high points fairly well. In brief: ad hoc, local systems of (everything) are often well-tuned to their specific environment, but tend to be resistant to external control, because they rely on knowledge and experience (metis) that's largely informal and inaccessible to bureaucrats and outsiders. Politicians, scientists, and entrepreneurs like to impose standards and regulations on these systems - in the forms of uniform methods of measurement, naming, living, etc. - so the systems become more 'legible' to those who wish to exploit them for profit/tax collection/resource acquisition. Such schemes often fail in predictably dramatic ways. Examples: 'scientific' forestry, forced adoption of family names, High Modernist urban planning, Tanzanian farming, more. I recommend reading the book, even if you only have time for a chapter or two - James Scott does a great job of bringing out the details of these historical moments in a very engaging manner.
In section 7 - er, VII - we get to see what our friend Scooter has gotten out of all this. We start by dismissing the whole book out of hand:
...Scott basically admits to stacking the dice against High Modernism and legibility. He admits that the organic livable cities of old had life expectancies in the forties because nobody got any light or fresh air and they were all packed together with no sewers and so everyone just died of cholera. He admits that at some point agricultural productivity multiplied by like a thousand times and the Green Revolution saved millions of lives and all that, and probably that has something to do with scientific farming methods and rectangular grids. He admits that it’s pretty convenient having a unit of measurement that local lords can’t change whenever they feel like it. Even modern timber farms seem pretty successful. After all those admissions, it’s kind of hard to see what’s left of his case.
Okay, good. But while James Scott is basically wrong, Scooter manages to concede that maybe sometimes James Scott is right that scientists ruin things due to their arrogance, like when progressives do it:
The closest analogy I can think of right now – maybe because it’s on my mind – is this story about check-cashing shops. Professors of social science think these shops are evil because they charge the poor higher rates, so they should be regulated away so that poor people don’t foolishly shoot themselves in the foot by going to them. But on closer inspection, they offer a better deal for the poor than banks do, for complicated reasons that aren’t visible just by comparing the raw numbers. Poor people’s understanding of this seems a lot like the metis that helps them understand local agriculture. And progressives’ desire to shift control to the big banks seems a lot like the High Modernists’ desire to shift everything to a few big farms. Maybe this is a point in favor of something like libertarianism?
Maybe indeed - I have always admired the rationalist ability to perform the libertarian equivalent of "this is good for Bitcoin". So the leftist is wrong about technocrats ruining things, except maybe when the technocrats are progressive, therefore libertarianism: all in all, a strong effort from Mr. Alexander. But to wrap it up is the punchline, the quote from the top:
[James Scott] points out that Tanzanian natives using their traditional farming practices were more productive than European colonists using scientific farming. I’ve had to listen to so many people talk about how “we must respect native people’s different ways of knowing” and “native agriculturalists have a profound respect for the earth that goes beyond logocentric Western ideals” and nobody had ever bothered to tell me before that they actually produced more crops per acre, at least some of the time. That would have put all of the other stuff in a pretty different light.
Why didn't the natives just explain to me that I could make more money by doing things their way? If they did that before I tried doing things my way, we could have skipped all the bad parts of colonialism - stupid natives.
In case this does get back to /ssc or even Scott himself, let's just spell it out:
The point of the book is not to point and laugh at the technocrats who failed to squeeze the most X out of Y because they didn't listen to the noble savages. The point is that 'how do we squeeze the most X out of Y' is a bad way to position yourself in relation to your surroundings. The point is that technocrats often succeed in squeezing more X out of Y over a relevant period of time via their techniques, but that treating a forest like a timber-maximizer is already missing the fucking point because a forest is also a home for woodland creatures, and a source for medicinal herbs and fruits and berries, and a nice place to take a hike and stare at the stars. The point is that the mistake was not made at the level of what was implemented, the mistake was made at the level of was was valued, and the implementation mistake was an inevitable downstream consequence of that. The point is that even if traditional Tanzanian farming methods didn't produce more crops per acre, they might still be preferable, because they are more sustainable or less time-intensive or etc, but that these benefits become unintelligible to the technocrat who has already committed to a value system where land is only judged by its yield per acre. THE POINT IS THAT YOU AND YOUR RATIONALIST BUDDIES ARE HAPPILY MAXIMIZING FOR YOUR VALUES OF PROFIT AND IQ AND FROZEN PEACHES, AND JUSTIFYING A SYSTEM OF RUNAWAY CONSUMPTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEVASTATION AND GLOBAL EXPLOITATION ON THE GROUNDS OF THESE LIMITED VALUES, BECAUSE YOUR VALUE STRUCTURE ISN'T CAPABLE OF ACCOUNTING FOR THE INCALCULABLE DAMAGE YOU'RE DOING TO YOUR FELLOW HUMANS AND TO THE PLANET. You are Bill Hicks' advertisers. You are the paperclip maximizer of your nightmares. You have convinced yourself of the righteousness of your few terminal values and are now incapable of seeing outside that narrow cone of human existence.
This was the Scott Alexander post which finally closed the door on my positive hopes for the rationalist community. I used to think that by engaging with these clearly intelligent people, it would be possible to have productive debates, learn things, and maybe expose them to some new perspectives. I am no longer so positive. Scott Alexander clearly took time to read this dense, 350+ page book and wrote a solid summary of it for his readers. He immersed himself in the point, he reproduced the point, he spent thousands of words on his blog bashing himself and his readers over the head with the point...and then missed the point. So hard, it actually fucks with my head.
I can't really accurately express how this book review makes me feel. It kinda makes me wanna laugh/cry/vomit/headdesk into eternity. How can one react to this? How can you engage with somebody who has clearly gone out of their way to immerse themselves in educational material, and come out the other end with less than nothing?
I suppose all you can do is sneer.

For Once A Thoughtful Post on SLF

u/cornycatlady posted on SLF:
https://www.reddit.com/sugarlifestyleforum/comments/bokiyd/scared_of_getting_older_as_a_sb/
You may have noticed:
  1. The aged out prostitutes on SLF have no qualms about launching ageist attacks against younger girls between 18-25, calling the latter simpletons and immature. In reality, the thoughts expressed by the post showed much more maturity than the lying hags attacking heit.
  2. Many of those aged out prostitutes are chronic liars. Who would believe their stories about SD's buying her a Tesla Model S then a Model 3? (It's like buying a Toyota Camry/Corolla to replace a recent vintage Lexus LS; did the writer ever get to see the inside of those cars before writing such nonsense?) or SD giving her a beach house before conveniently dying? or being engaged to an SD of many years but somehow the SD has relocatedd to Europe for many months and they are still engaged to be married.
  3. The buying-her-a-beach-house-then-dying-timely story sounds like the wishful dream of an aged out prostitute pretending to be an SB. It shouldn't be a surprise that a woman having to stay in sex industry for too long would become bitter, and consequently nobody, not even very very old men would want to invest in her as an SB. Little wonder some very wealthy very old men like Bob Kraft would prefer a cash-and-carry sex-worker instead of a time-bomb like the former Clippers' owner's "SB" V blowing up and breaking his heart even after millions of dollars invested into her. "V" would be classified as a sex-worker / prostitute not an SB in this forum due to her juggling of multiple men besides her primary benefactor. It shouldn't be a surprise that she would turn out to be a fiasco.
  4. The lies that the aged-out prostitutes on SLF weave are actually real life lessons on not to become a prostitute (i.e. providing sex to multiple men, thereby making her own life insecure in the long run) . . . if you know how to read between their lines. If older ladies were more desirable than younger ladies, why is the term "Sugar Baby" instead of "Sugar Hag"?
Now let me address some of the specific issues raised in that post:
For once in my life, I envy not being a man.
No need for such envy; you likely don't notice the sorry lives of the bottom 95% of men.
For us women, our attractiveness is predominantly tied to our bodies and faces, and inevitably diminishes with time.
Your physical attractiveness allow you to engage and enjoy the attention of the top 1-3% of men. That is possible only because they pay little attention to older and less attractive women. Put it another way, even if you are a 9+ (there are no 10's); i.e. in the top 10% in beauty and youth, if all men were attracted to women in complete disregard of age then you'd only have 1 in 10 chance of finding a guy making half a mil or more a year as that's the cut-off line for the top 1% . . . that's for a 9+! only 1 in 10 chance. Of course in real life a girl of 9+ has better than 10% chance: she can get her turn while she is young and pretty. So instead of complaining about the transiency of the power of your youth/beauty, be appreciative of the fact that you can punch above your weight for a few years, so to speak. The dropping out of ladies in their 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's and etc. that used to be attractive years ago is the reason why you are able to find the time and attention from a man in the top 1-3% when you only need to be in the top 10% to 20% (i.e. 8 to 9+; sometimes even a 7 on the 10-point scale might work).
Of course, personality, priorities, all that inside stuff matters too for attractiveness in women, but it won't attract SD when we are 50 years old.
The real number is much lower than 50, like 30 if not 27. I wouldn't start with a new girl over 27. I prefer longer term relationships that last a few years.
However with men, for me at least, wealth, education, attire, health, and personality is what I deem sexy. These things are acquired over time and have a longevity to this sex appeal.
Instinctively you are looking for security from a male partner to help you with your baby projects. That's what women are biologically programmed to do, just like men are programmed to seek sex. Both are healthy and normal sexual desires.
Many SLF comments also gave you advice on investing. The same forum would have recommended Bitcoin if you were asking the question 18 months ago, just before it lost 80% of its value in the following year. They are now recommending stock indexing and real estate after a decade of continuous price expansion in both, where were they in 2009 to 2011? I was buying real estate hands-over-fist between 2009 to 2014 (at 30-70% price discount compared to the 2007 peak), but stopped in 2015 as higher prices made buying unattractive. Price cycles like those are common in financial history. NASDAQ (mostly tech and biotech stocks) index lost 80% of its value between 2000 and 2003. The 2008 drop cut SP500 in half. The supposed advice from sex-workers on SLF reminds me of this scene from The Big Short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZTFNizSNGs It's another reason why professional career choices with short time horizons are bad ideas: the financial bubbles and busts are there to harvest money from the dummies to those "deserving money." The old saying: Money always finds ways to reach hands that deserve it. Before you follow the advice of indexing this late in the current cycle (10 years in, as of Feb 2019), you may want to think about whether you have either the intellect or time horizon for either joining the herd stamped or beating the index.
Let's take a detour and examine two simple games of dice rolls: a simple standard six-sided dice (1-6) vs. two dices rolling and averaging the two. The single fair dice would of course give (100% / 6) = 16.7% chance to each of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Rolling two dices and averaging the two would still produce results between 1 and 6, averaging exactly the same 3.5 expectation/average value. However, the distribution of outcomes are drastically different: there are 36 possible permutations when rolling two dices (many are redundant outcomes after averaging), but exactly 1 out 36 can produce an average of 6, so the probability of getting a 6 is 1/36 = 2.8%, which is drastically lower than the 16.7% probability of getting an outcome of 6 when rolling a single dice. In fact, there are two different ways of getting an average of 5.5: (6, 5) (5, 6); three different ways of getting an average of 5: (5, 5) (6, 4) (4, 6). So there are a total of 6 ways of getting 5 or better when rolling two dices and averaging them (out of 36 possible outcomes) and their average is (1x6 + 2x5.5 + 3x5) = 5.3. The cut-off line for the top 16% in single dice roll is a 6, whereas the cut-off for the top 16% in averaging two dice rolls is a full point lower (16.7% lower) at 5 (not even 5.5) and the average of the top 16% is only 5.3 (compared to 6 in single dice rolls); the average of the top 1/6 outcome from averaging-two-dice-rolls is literally lower than the average of the top 1/3 outcomes from single dice rolls! 5.3 vs. 5.5. There are far more than 33% probability of getting an outcome between 3 and 4 (inclusive of 3 and 4) when averaging two dice rolls.
That's the type of mathematical reality that you have to deal with when averaging two X-chromosomes (aka "being a woman," averaging two strands of dices) vs. having only one X-chromosome (aka "being a man," rolling only one genetic dice at each gene site for protein encoding/synethsis); X-chromosome is where most genes for intelligence are located (Y-chromosome having only less than 80 genes compared to the X's around 1200 genes is little more than a stub for exposing the single X-chromosome in men, so that the females can have more clear targets for sexual selection). Women are effectively given a genetic insurance policy to have far more outcomes in the middle of the distribution (the equivalent of between 3 and 4 in the dice rolls above) while giving up substantial probabilities at both extremes: both the extremely brilliant and the extremely dumb have much more men than women. Heck, the curse of having only one X-chromosome is so severe that boys have statistically significant higher probability of dying before reaching adulthood than girls do.
Unfortunately, as a woman, the biological instincts make you see only the top few percentage of men (it is the driving force behind evolution, and the reason why humanity exists); btw, men similarly instinctively sense whether you still have live eggs on the shelf, courtesy of the same evolutionary process. It is hard enough for a man to be successful enough to be in the top 1-5% (what it takes to be able to afford sugaring consistently), literally only 1 in 20 chance or lower; it's much harder for a woman . . . and more than half of it is due to what you are born with! Decades and billions of federal money spent on Head-Start already proved that education, even starting as early as pre-school, has little effect on a person's eventual level of success in adulthood; what makes a good college good is the admission process (i.e. the student body itself).
So, what's the solution for a young woman? How to put together a relatively happy and content life for yourself? (instead of concocting them in fantasy stories online)
IMHO, the first order of business is learning to be content with what you have, what you can produce on your own (and what your partner can provide for you when you can find one). Then try to recruit a competent/excellent male helpesponsor. If your SD is not destined to be your reproductive partner, then the less luxury he exposes you to is ironically better for you in the long run: leaving more room for your future reproductive partner to impress you. Given today's feminist indoctrination (premising that women are identical to men), it's hard for a woman to be a submissive good wife: who wants to be a good submissive wife when her friends are beating up their husbands and bragging about it and cheered on by mainstream media. Unless you are one of the rare ones who can be content with "leaving the burden of family decision making to the husband," a more suitable solution may well be co-parenting with a successful man: he pays for your own household, in which you indeed are head-and-shoulders above those surrounding you (your kids); his sponsorship can also enable you to be better off than your immediate neighbors, in a good neighborhood with good school district, but not necessarily the most expensive neighborhoods where the neighboring wives make each other unhappy via their competition.
My advice to my own daughter is getting "married" (de jure or de facto) by 22yo, likely the peak of a girl's "marketability." Have babies early while physical recovery is fast. Then pursue professional careers after the kids are grown old enough to attend schools. Don't obsess with the rat race or being a tax slave. She will likely find much more happiness in her own family (especially her own kids) than in serving bosses and business customers.

Predicting Value of Crypto

Almost every day, I hear the same sentiment expressed: the value of cryptocurrencies is impossible to predict, and therefore they cannot be considered an investment. Just last week, President Donald Trump hinted at this idea in a series of Tweets.

So, is Trump right? Does Bitcoin’s volatility mean that its value is just a roll of the dice, or is there a way to determine (with reasonable certainty) when to buy and sell? Can Metcalfe’s Law or another formula be used to determine when a currency may be over- or under-valued? Can assets that aren’t touched by banks have a true value at all?

Metcalfe’s Law: A Brief History

In the 1980s, Robert Metcalfe, the inventor of Ethernet, proposed that the value of a telecommunications network is proportional to the square of the number of nodes (or users), N, in the network. Put another way, the value of a network is proportional to the number of connections between users, assuming that all users are connected to each other; the more people I can contact, the more valuable the system will be to me.
In 2015, Zhang et al. discovered that this same principle applies to Facebook and Tencent (China’s largest social media network) when the number of monthly active users is used as N.
In 2017, Ken Alabi demonstrated that the law also applies to three different cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dash) fairly well. Just one year later, Wheatley, et al. proposed a modification to the formula for cryptocurrencies, N^(1.69), that fit the data better and accounted for the fact that not every user is connected to or interested in connecting to every other. The researchers estimated that each user is connected to N^(2/3) other users.

What About Bubbles?

Following a series of major crashes in the price of Bitcoin, many in the crypto community lost faith in the ability of Metcalfe’s Law to accurately predict the value of cryptocurrencies. After all, the number of users did not fall as dramatically as the price after Mt. Gox was hacked in 2011, a major Ponzi scheme involving Bitcoin was discovered in 2012, Mt. Gox collapsed in 2013 or South Korea threatened regulation in 2017.
However, Didier Sornette proposed that a market is bound to crash if its value is growing at a super-exponential rate (if its rate of growth is itself growing), unless there is an infinite supply of people to join the market. This idea is widely accepted, but it does not postulate exactly when the market will crash, only that it will eventually. The wise investor will be aware of this condition and, when the price starts tumbling, will sell immediately.

Sornette goes on to argue that the exact timing of each of these crashes was determined by the outside events affecting the market and that any market disruption would have caused similar effects due to this super-exponential growth. Each event was just the straw that broke the camel’s back (before the camel regenerated, only to have its back broken again).

Network Value to Transactions (NVT) Ratio

Popularized by Willy Woo and Chris Burniske, the Network Value to Transactions ratio is another formula that aims to determine when the price of a crypto asset is over- or under-valued.

NVT = (Daily Market Cap)/(90-Day Moving Average of Daily Transaction Volume)

Kalichkin suggests that any NVT over 20 indicates that a coin is overvalued and a correction is likely. However, as with the other models, one cannot use this to determine exactly when a correction will occur. In addition, it can be challenging to find accurate data on daily transaction volume, limiting the practicality of this metric.

Final Words

According to Edward Fricker, co-founder of the lightning wallet TrustlessBank, attempts to determine the objective value of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies miss the mark: " Metcalfe’s Law and NVT have been promoted by analysts who struggled to find some way to determine an objective value [of Bitcoin] that is outside the market price, but in doing so, they failed to see the truth that was right in front of them: the market price is exactly the same as the objective value because Bitcoin is the most liquid asset in the world.”

Bethash is a crypto gambling casino created in 2019 and powered by the Decentralized EOS Network. Bethash.io allows players to bet on future blocks and earn passive income. Bethash is available in 3 languages and offers 5 different gambling games like Lottery, Dice, Blackjack, Slots and Banker Bull and is planning on releasing two more soon. It is the fairest casino in the crypto community and it’s becoming one of the most popular ones as well.

Features

Bethash.io only accepts Tron (TRX) deposits as well as other cryptocurrencies and players can exchange their TRX for EOS for example, inside the casino using the in-house Bethash exchange. Users can also benefit from the daily passive income that Bethash offers using 65% of all the house edge. This will be sent to the Bonus Pool in real time and all HASH holders will share the bonus pool in a specific percentage proportional to their holding amount.
Players can check how much they are getting rewarded at any time at: https://bethash.io/page/dividend
Players are also rewarded with HPoints which can be used to bet on the casino as well as participating in various promotions. Players will earn 1 HPoint for every 10 USDT value bet placed using rates that are recalculated every 5 minutes. Keep in mind that HPoints cannot be used outside the Bethash casino and is non-transferable.
Additionally, HASH holders will get:
  1. A proportional share of the dividends pool after staking.
  2. On each HASH being purchased, a percentage of the sales (which is in HPoint) will be distributed among current round HASH buyers.
In order for players to get HASH they will need to spend HPoints in the ‘GET HASH’ platform inside the casino and where each HASH redeemed adds 30 seconds to a jackpot timer but will also increase the cost of each HASH token. The last player who redeems HASH will get 70% of the jackpot instantly when the round ends. Players can also simply stake HASH tokens and get rewarded that way.
Bethash.io also holds regular competitions and giveaways which are usually announced in the chat where players can ask questions, discuss about their gambling strategies or simply chat about anything they want.
A loyalty rewards program is another unique feature offered by Bethash which shares all its net token profit to their token holders

Bonuses and Rewards

Bethash.io is currently offering a sign up bonus where players have to join telegram and follow Bethash on twitter to receive 100 HPoints without having to deposit anything. Profits can be redeemed to HASH at any point without any kind of roll over requirement.
Additionally, Bethash holds a wagering war every 3 months with a prize of $5000 to TOP 10 players. Players can also participate in the weekly race with a price of $500 where again, only TOP 10 players are rewarded.
Players can also benefit from the Leveling system Bethash offers. Every level up gives the players the possibility to choose one of the following bonuses:

Players can level up by playing games and wagering or inviting their friends to play on Bethash.

Provably Fair

Bethash.io uses a provably fair system similar to famous ‘Satoshi Dice’ but instead of using Bitcoin, all winning numbers of EOSHASH games are generated using the latest EOS transaction hash, this makes it literally impossible for the casino to ever cheat since the EOS transaction HASH ID’s are out of anyone's control. Players can check and verify their bets at any time they want.
This works well because EOS has a faster block generation time than Bitcoin or Ethereum with a 0.5 second block time.

Support

Bethash.io has a help center that contains a FAQ and other questions users might have, additionally, players can submit a ticket if they need further assistance.

Conclusion

Bethash is an unique crypto gambling platform using the EOS decentralized network. It offers a simple yet beautiful design with an user-friendly interface. It has a good variety of gambling games and plans to release more in the future. In terms of fairness, it is perhaps the fairest possible casino out there by making use of the powerful EOS decentralized nature, players can be 100% sure they are not getting cheated.
Bethash.io is also offering a ton of bonuses and rewards as well as many benefits to their token holders. A really nice support system with a lot of information for new players but also the possibility of sending a support ticket.

Recommended Crypto Gambling Website (Reviewed)

Hi everyone,
I will be straight forward so that I will give you as much information as you need. I have been an active user for 2 months, the website feels great and you have decent chances to make a profit. For example, on my first day, I managed to make 100€ worth of XLM (Stellar). I started out with 200 XLM and slowly I managed to increase it to 1200 XLM by playing one of their games called "Dice".

The aspects I would stand out about Luckygames.io ?

And many others that I might have forgotten to mention...

Would I recommend it?

For sure, I have been trying it for over a month now and It is excellent but also addicting. On top of this, it was my first Crypto gambling website I have tried, and so far, I have nothing bad to point out. The community is extremely active, you have people typing in the chat about all the time (user-friendly interface and extremely simple) and they are useful towards new players.

Website: Luckygames.io
